Chris Hickman - Driving Transformation Across Critical Infrastructure
I took my first power class from Prof. Kersting when I was 18 and that has been my life's passion since. I'm proud to have served in the industry that provides the lifeblood services of everything the human race does each and every day. I've been blessed to have worked for and with some of the best and brightest people in these industries and they have all taught me that there is always a better way to do something, but it won't be easy to accomplish if its actually worth doing. Change in these core industries must overcome decades and decades of inertia and is the biggest challenge faced by utilities today. My career has been centered on these changes and improvements for electric, gas, telecommunications and water utilities to enhance service and delivery.
The next decade will see dramatic change for all utilities but the need for reliable and affordable service will remain the same. Blending technology and new service offerings into these businesses will define success and failure for these industries and the ability to accept and implement change will be the key driver for the management teams.
A new version of 'utility' will be created in the next decade and many new players will emerge to challenge the traditional models that we all operate within today. This evolution has already begun and forced open the doors to a very different and distributed future for all utility services. The opportunity to be a trusted partner and supplier of these critical utility services is now open to newcomers for the first time since Samuel Insull created the framework for regulatory economics. Those who recognize how technologies in these sectors are changing, and customer needs are morphing with these changes, have perhaps the single greatest economic opportunity of any business for the next 50 years.
